When you think of high-ranking politicians welcoming foreign diplomats, your mind probably goes to 10 Downing Street, Chequers or even Buckingham Palace or Windsor Castle. However, there’s a less well-known but equally grand estate that sits not too far from London’s border where US Vice President JD Vance will be staying this weekend.

Starting today (Friday, August 8), Foreign Secretary David Lammy will host Vance – who’s mid-family holiday – at Chevening House, a Grade-I listed mansion with a maze and lake. They’re set to “discuss a variety of topics pertaining to the US-UK relationship.”

While glimpses inside Chevening House have been rare over the years, the photos that have been taken give a sense of the real grandeur of the place. We mentioned the maze and lake, right?

The photos below – a weird number of which contain Liz Truss, remember her? – were snapped at various official events, including meetings with other foreign representatives.

It’s not known what exact tone Lammy and Vance’s meetings will take, but the two know each other pretty well by now and have even, apparently, bonded over their shared Christian faith.

“Let me just say on JD Vance that I’ve met him now on several occasions,” Lammy previously remarked, “we share a similar working-class backgrounds with addiction issues in our family.

“We’ve written books on that, we’ve talked about that, and we’re both Christians. So I think I can find common ground with JD Vance.”
