Chelsea have confirmed the permanent transfer of Armando Broja to Burnley. The striker leaves after more than a decade on the books with the Blues.

After spending last season on loan at Everton, Broja has departed and will now attempt to help keep Scott Parker’s promoted side up in the Premier League next season. He leaves having made 38 appearances, scoring three times for Chelsea.

The announcement of Broja’s exit comes just a few hours before Chelsea and Enzo Maresca play their first pre-season friendly of the summer. Chelsea welcome Bayer Leverkusen to Stamford Bridge just over one week ahead of their Premier League opener.

Broja was never used by Maresca and he floated between loans. He has struggled to remain fit after suffering a damaging knee injury in the 2022/23 season.

Chelsea have already signed Joao Pedro and Liam Delap to play up front under Maresca moving forward and Nicolas Jackson could be on his way out. The club are still in talks with Alejandro Garnacho and Xavi Simons over adding to their attacking options.

Broja is likely to bank Chelsea up to £20million which will see their summer sales total reach £235million. Lesley Ugochukwu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall were sold earlier in the week.

He moves to Turf Moor on a five-year deal, where he will play next to Ugochukwu and fellow Cobham graduate Bashir Humphreys. The Burnley-Chelsea connection has been a strong one in recent years with Parker, an ex-Chelsea player, one of many recent overlaps.

Ian Maatsen spent a year on loan in Lancashire, playing a key part in their promotion push under Vincent Kompany. Burnley have committed to spending over £65million on Chelsea players this summer.

Upon the announcement, Broja said: “I am really excited to be here as a Burnley player. It’s a really positive time to be joining this club ahead of the start of the new Premier League season. I can’t wait to get going!”

He added: “I’m feeling good, I’m ready and I’m excited about the challenge of playing for this club. I can already feel the support from the Burnley fans – I can tell you all that I will be giving my all every time I pull on the famous Claret shirt.”
