Thousands of you voted in our poll of who you’d most like to see step into the shoes of 007 – and while popular British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson put up a good fight, there was one particular hero who trounced all others …

The results are in and the actor Mirror readers would most most like to see take on the role of 007 has left us all shaken and more than a little stirred.

And while popular British actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson has reportedly been offered the James Bond gig, the Angus, Thongs, and Perfect Snogging star can only manage fourth place in our poll. You voted in your thousands and most want none other than Superman himself, Henry Cavill in the iconic role.

After Daniel Craig ended his 15-year stint as the world’s most famous ‘secret’ agent, producers have been hunting high and low for that perfect replacement. And with his chiselled good looks, piercing blue eyes and more suavity than you can shake a Walther PPK at, it’s hardly surprising Cavill is our runaway winner:

Who Mirror readers want to play Bond: How you voted

  1. Henry Cavill – 922
  2. Tom Hardy – 430
  3. James Norton – 404
  4. Aaron Taylor-Johnson – 271
  5. Cillian Murphy – 196
  6. Reg̩-Jean Page Р132
  7. Other – 129
  8. Damson Idris – 10
  9. Paul Mescal – 9
  10. Dev Patel – 4
  11. Sope Dirisu – 3

Henry bagged an incredible 922 of your votes, with Hollywood A-lister Tom Hardy beaten into second with a still very respectable 430. Happy Valley star James Norton was third on 404 votes with Kick Ass star and rumoured new 007 Aaron Taylor-Johnson in fourth.

NOTE: This poll is still live so results are subject to change

After picking up the Best Actor award at this year’s Oscars ceremony, Cillian Murphy saw his odds slashed from 50/1 to 9/1, no doubt helping to secure a top 5 place in our poll. Making up the rest were Regé-Jean Page (132), Damson Idris on 19, Paul Mescal on 9, Dev Patel on 4 and Sope Dirisu on 3.

Many of you offered up alternative suggestions of who you’d like to see cast as James Bond. There was a lot of love for Outlander star Sam Heughan, likewise Loki actor Tom Hiddleston. Action veteran Jason Statham got a few shout-outs, as did Thor’s Chris Hemsworth. Perhaps surprisingly, several readers were keen for former 007 Pierce Brosnan to step back into the fray – though at 70 he may perhaps be too long in the tooth, but it all depends on where the producers want to take the franchise …

Since its debut in 1962 with Dr No, the 007 franchise has seen seven actors play James Bond – Sean Connery, David Niven, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. With a combined gross of more than £5.7 billion to date, the Bond franchise is the fifth-highest-grossing film series of all time.

Our recent news of the role reportedly being offered to Aaron Taylor-Johnson sparked quite a lively debate, here are some of our favourite comments:

Top comments from our readers

Couldbebetter: “I’d enjoy being saved by Rege-Jean Page. I think Daniel Craig was the only Bond who looked like he could actually do the job required of a double O.”

Loodabell: “[Aaron] doesn’t do it for me but my daughter will be happy! I would have liked Idris but I think he’s too old now. Tom Hardy or Richard Madden for me.”

Chrissie1: “Henry Cavill would get the women in the cinemas with no problem.”

Olima: “I think Aaron is a bit young to play Bond. But I don’t think he’d do it for fear of being typecast. But if the price is right, who knows! I think he’s a red herring though. His name has been mentioned a lot.”

Candc2011: “I think Paul Mescal would make a good Bond.”

Jayalva: “I genuinely have no idea who this [Aaron] fellow is. If he takes the part I hope he does a good job. Keep away from the cheese and be more like the books!”

Pailof Water: “James Norton for me.”

Ranger1957: “Henry Cavill – born for the role!”

Redcat2: “Taylor-Johnson can play a killer for laughs (Bullet Train) – but do we really want to go back to the comedy Bond of the Roger Moore era?

Betting suspended on Bond

Leading bookmaker Coral has suspended betting on the next James Bond, after some reports suggest Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been offered the iconic role as 007. Coral’s John Hill said: “We have pulled the plug on our next James Bond betting to let the dust settle. If reports are to be believed, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who has been our favourite for the last 12 months, could be set to replace Daniel Craig.”

But prior to this, the bookies had these actors as the favourites:

Aaron Taylor-Johnson (13/8)

Henry Cavill (5/2)

Damson Idris (7/2)

Tom Hardy (5/1)

James Norton (5/1)

Rege-Jean Page (11/2)
