Andrea Berta still has five Arsenal transfers to complete for Mikel Arteta before deadline day

In seven days and 12 hours (from when this article was first published), the summer transfer window will be closed. Monday, September 1 at 7pm.

It will be almost exactly 24 hours after Arsenal finish their third Premier League game of the season at Anfield against Liverpool. The international break follows.

It will then be down to Mikel Arteta to get what he can from the squad left behind until January. Arsenal and new sporting director Andrea Berta believe they have equipped him with a group able to truly compete.

There is added depth and strength in quality throughout. From a proper second-choice goalkeeper to extra centre-back cover and replacements for two midfielders who left for free at the end of their contracts. Arsenal have spent and bolstered the starting XI and bench.

In attack, it is most obvious with Viktor Gyokeres in position as the established No.9 that supporters have been crying out for for so long. There is also Noni Madueke to provide competition and rotation for Bukayo Saka on the right, or a fresh element on the left.

Eberechi Eze is the creator and unique profile of a winger-attacking midfielder that was missing too. Everything that Arteta and Berta wanted before the window has happened.

Despite the short runway into their relationship, which started with a strange scenario of Arteta interviewing Berta rather than the other way round, which is usual for managers and sporting directors, they have gotten to this stage in a strong position. It does not take much of a look across the division to see how perilous these things can be.

Nuno Espirito Santo and former Arsenal chief Edu Gaspar have fallen out having never hit it off. That has made for a dramatic backdrop for the start of the season and does not help to settle anything down at a vital point.

Arsenal, in contrast, have made serene progress. There were complaints and concerns over the speed in which Gyokeres was signed as it dragged into pre-season. The choice to prioritise Noni Madueke over Eze and the money paid when a striker was still waiting also grated.

There was brief concern that Martin Zubimendi would choose Real Madrid late on but that was never really a possibility. All the while, Liverpool, Manchester City, Chelsea, and Manchester City all got down to business with more haste.

It has played out well for Arsenal, though. They enter the final week without the obvious need for anything extra. Unless one of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard or Kai Havertz is out for a much longer period than is initially hoped, then the incomings are surely done.

The results of scans on all three may well define if Berta has to frantically go looking again. Arsenal will be keen to avoid that at all costs.

Going the other way, there is work to do. Berta will need to improve on the legacy left by Edu of selling players. In recent years for Arsenal, if it has not been cashing in on Hale End graduates then significant sales have been almost non-existent.

The same logic is likely to continue for this week but must change moving forward. Reiss Nelson is the latest trying to leave having failed to get out permanently last summer.

A big fee is not expected at this point but Arsenal know they do not want to have these sorts of players hanging around. Whether it is yet another loan or finally a sale, Nelson is one that Berta will be pushing to find a new home for.

In the same camp is Fabio Vieira. He represents more value but not close to what Arsenal and hoping to recoup. They will not get close to the £40million spent on him and must seriously reduce their asking price if an exit is to be found.

Jakub Kiwior is in a similar category, although he has much more of a first-team role than Vieira. Arsenal would happily keep the Polish international but are aware of his desire to get minutes regularly.

They have the chance to make a healthy profit on the defender but could also price him out of an exit as well. Albert Sambi Lokonga is closer to Vieira in this conversation.

He has been on loan and has no role under Arteta. Signed for relatively cheap, there is less of an obstacle here and may well get done without much fuss as the deadline approaches.

Oleksandr Zinchenko is maybe the most high-profile player on this list. He has fallen down the pecking order at left-back and has struggled for form and fitness for almost two seasons. Arsenal could hold out for a decent fee but may also find themselves unable to shift him.

For Berta, this is a change of speed and focus. He did the other part perfectly and must now find an answer to the remaining five questions.
