Arsenal were dealt an interesting scenario when drawn with Bayern Munich knowing that the away side’s supporters had been banned by UEFA from the Emirates Stadium after fireworks were used in a previous game. There were expectations that some supporters of the away side might try to find a way into the game and sit with the home fans instead.
The Gunners meanwhile knew they would have 60,000-plus of their own, perceived to be a significant advantage on paper. Yet, being in the ground it almost felt like something was missing and the presence of away supporters it seems helps the home crowd to build momentum and respond to opposing chanting.
Ironically, it turned out there were indeed away fans present and on the night several were ejected. Arsenal had put in place measures to try and mitigate the issue.
There was an embargo placed on memberships so that Bayern supporters could not pose as Arsenal fans and buy tickets. Furthermore, tickets could not be transferred to memberships purchased after this date.
In a statement, the club said: “Any Season Ticket Holder (inclusive of Ticket Transfers) or Arsenal member’s seat found to be in possession of an away fan will be suspended indefinitely.” The reality is, as mentioned, some did get in.
football.london understands that less than ten Bayern supporters were ejected on the night with stewards working swiftly to remove them when made aware of their presence. From where we were located in the press box, two were taken out after Serge Gnabry scored the equaliser and were caught celebrating with the home fans in the West Stand.

Since the game, a video has surfaced online of one person being ejected with scuffles breaking out during the process. There is yet to be any information on this matter as the video surpasses over a million views.
Arsenal now travel to Munich in midweek for the second leg of the Champions League tie. With no away goals rule, the Gunners could go through on penalties if scores remain level after extra time or a win by a single goal is enough to set up a semi-final tie with either Manchester City or Real Madrid who drew 3-3 in the Bernabeu.
