Arsenal could be forced to deal with a nightmare scenario just as the summer transfer window opens.

The Gunners are now officially able to agree deals with clubs to sign players ahead of next season, with players able to move to the Emirates Stadium from July 1 at the start of their contracts.

June 30 will also mark the day that players’ contracts come to an end if they are yet to sign an extension. Thomas Partey falls into that category at Arsenal, with the midfielder’s current deal set to expire at the end of the month.

It was reported by football.london last month that Mikel Arteta wants Partey to remain at the club amid interest in Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

Both players operate in a No.6 role in the middle of the park, but it seems Arsenal want to go into next season with both players at the Emirates Stadium.

However, The Sun have reported that Barcelona have now opened talks to sign Partey on a pre-contract agreement.

The report claims that the La Liga giants want to sign Partey on a free transfer when his current deal with Arsenal expires at the end of June as they look to take advantage of the player’s contract situation.

Partey has been able to speak to clubs outside England about a pre-contract agreement since the turn of the year.

Talks have been underway between Arsenal and the midfielder’s representatives for some time, but as things stand no agreement has been reached.

This has seemingly given clubs such as Barcelona encouragement that a free transfer could be agreed for the Ghana international to leave North London this summer.

Last month, Arteta was asked whether or not he wants Partey to remain an Arsenal player and he gave a clear answer.

“Yes. I think consistency-wise, it’s been his [Partey] best season,” Arteta told reporters on May 22.

“The way he’s played, performed, his availability, has been exceptional, and he’s a really important player for us.”
