There’s a cheap and simple way to deter cats from your garden – as they never like to use their own garden to go to the toilet in, and it will cost you just 40p

Cats don’t like using their own gardens to go to the toilet – so they usually go next door.

However, this can be infuriating if you are one of the people whose garden has been chosen as a cat’s personal litter tray – although they’re great at keeping pests out of gardens, they can also be a pain when you have to clean up their poo daily.

While the owners can’t help where their cat decides to go to the toilet, you can help deter them away all with a simple 40p ingredient they hate according to one gardening fan.

Not only do they use other people’s gardens as toilets, but they can also dig up flower beds, snooze among plants and cause havoc for homegrown produce. While it can be hard to keep them out, one gardening enthusiast has shared a simple way to deter them away.

Cats have a very good sense of smell that helps them find prey, as well as keep them out of danger, and this means some smells may be “unbearable” to the felines, as reported by The Express. Sheenaugh McMahon took to the Gardening Hints and Tips Facebook page, to share that all you need are some tea bags and eucalyptus oil and claimed it “works a treat”.

This is because they both have strong smells that cats hate, and Sheenaugh explained: “I had a problem with cats using my gravel front garden as a little tray. I was told to use used tea bags soaked in eucalyptus oil. I tried it and it works a treat so anyone with this problem too, try it and cats will stop pooing in your garden. Apparently, they hate the smell.”

This idea was further backed up by gardening expert David Domoney who said it has also been “very effective” for him. He also suggested instead of soaking the tea bag in eucalyptus, muscle heat spray is effective and said: “One of the things that has worked effectively for me in the past is to save tea bags and spray them with a muscle heat spray, like Deep Heat.”

You can pick up tea bags for 40p from Asda and eucalyptus oil for £1.11 on Amazon.
