Chelsea kick off their FIFA Club World Cup campaign on Monday evening as they take on Los Angeles FC at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
The Blues are now in the United States after jetting off from London yesterday (Friday) ahead of their opening match on Monday night. Four new signings have been included in the 28-man squad, with Liam Delap, Mike Penders, Dario Essugo and Mamadou Sarr all in the US.
They will all be hoping to make their Chelsea debuts against LAFC on Monday, with the match kicking off at 3pm local time (8pm UK). After that, the Blues will fly to Philadelphia for the other two group stage games against Flamengo and Esperance.
Chelsea face Flamengo in their second group game at the Lincoln Financial Field, with the match scheduled for Friday, June 20 (2pm local time kick-off/7pm UK). The Blues will then take on Esperance, a Moroccan side, on Tuesday, June 24 at 9pm local time, or Wednesday, June 25 at 2am UK time.
If Chelsea are to progress as group winners, then the Blues’ round of 16 match will take place in Miami. Should they also go through that, the quarter-final will be in Atlanta before back-to-back games in New York for the semi-final and final of the competition.
Many have questioned how seriously the Premier League teams – Chelsea and Manchester City – will be taking the revamped tournament this summer. But if player interviews are anything to go by, Chelsea are desperate to win the first ever edition of this much-changed competition.
Speaking this week, midfielder Enzo Fernandez has shared his excitement: “I’m very happy to play in it and it’s a new competition for me. I’m very happy to be able to represent Chelsea and to play for this club and let’s hope we can go and win the tournament.
“This is a very important competition being played at the global level. It’s a competition that will be watched by the whole world and we hope to do the best job possible.
“We know it’s at the end of the season, but we hope to go into it with as much energy as possible and to be able to win the trophy, which is very important for the club.”
