It was a remarkable night for Chelsea and those associated with the club on Thursday after their dramatic 4-3 victory over Manchester United.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side were on the brink of a damaging defeat after blowing a 2-0 lead but turned it around in style at Stamford Bridge. Conor Gallagher scored the opening goal before Cole Palmer doubled the lead on 20 minutes.
Goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Bruno Fernandes ensured United were level at the break. Garnacho then bagged his second of the evening on 67 minutes before Palmer came to the rescue twice late in stoppage time.
He made no mistake from the spot and then struck again after he was left unmarked. His effort deflected off Scott McTominay as Stamford Bridge erupted.
Speaking after the game, Pochettino said: “It was amazing. We were the better team today and it was fair we scored in the the last minute. We started really well, 2-0 (up), the game was under control, then we made a mistake and suffered an emotional impact. It wasn’t easy to deal with.
“In the second half we controlled the game (but) conceded in transitions. It was important to finish like that, creating the connection between our fans and players. It’s a very good thing that happened today. It should be a turning point for the fans’ trust in the team.”
The result only leaves Chelsea tenth in the table but they have the chance to close the gap on United to just two points if they win their game-in- hand. Palmer wrote on Instagram: “Wow. Until the end!.”
His post prompted a lot of reaction from his teammates. Reece James wrote: “Yes sirrrr,” before RaheemSterling added: “Different.”
Malo Gusto continued: “I’m cold,” and Enzo Fernandes replied: “Amazing [blue heart emoji].
Levi Colwill said: “Just wow,” and Marc Cucurella stated: “Cold Palmer.”
Gallagher described him as the ‘main man’ followed by clap and heart emoji. Blues legend John Terry was also spotted among those commenting. He wrote: Cole Palmer [three football and blue heart emojis].”
