Chelsea proven right over £51m transfer decision as Paris Saint-Germain stance emerges

Chelsea have been accused of committing several transfer errors during the Todd Boehly regime, though one correct call they made is now coming to light.

The Blues pulled out of a deal to sign Manuel Ugarte last summer after Paris Saint-Germain gatecrashed negotiations at the last minute, offering the Uruguayan midfielder a more lucrative financial package.

Ugarte opted to sign for the French giants in the end, leaving Sporting as part of a deal worth £51.1m. Despite winning the league and cup double in his debut campaign, things have not necessarily gone according to plan from an individual perspective for the player.

The 23-year-old made his fair share of appearances for the club, though the latest reports from France have indicated Ugarte is at risk of being sold this summer, just one year after arriving. Indeed, Le10Sport via Le Parisien has stated PSG would be prepared to offload their No.4 “in the event of a good offer”.

It is added that PSG’s sporting director has identified Newcastle star Bruno Guimaraes and Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich as two possible replacements should Ugarte be moved on in the coming weeks.

Explaining his decision to sign for PSG last summer, Ugarte remarked: “Why I chose to join PSG? The size of the club, there’s also the fans,” Ugarte said. “I have always loved clubs with passionate fans. It’s something that really counted in my choice. Most important thing for me is to be able to win big things; I want to win trophies.”

It is of course too early to tell whether or not the Uruguay international will go on to become a success at his current team or elsewhere, though it would be a surprise to see Chelsea return with another offer for his services. Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo are beginning to look at home in the heart of the midfield, and there is still the return of Romeo Lavia to come after a long-term injury setback limited the Belgian to only one appearance during his debut campaign.
