Anyone who’s sat the driver theory test knows it’s a mix of revising road signs and layouts, and applying common sense to the questions. But with a pass mark of 43 out of 50, you can’t rely on common sense alone.

Worryingly, Department for Transport data has reveals that the pass rate for theory tests plummeted from 65% in the 2007/08 financial year to just 44% in 2022/23. With the theory test constantly evolving to reflect modern driving, hazards and environmental factors, do licence holders still have the necessary knowledge to pass?

MyLondon has sifted through two practice theory tests on the Government’s website to highlight some of the questions you might encounter. The actual exam consists of 50 questions, requiring a pass mark of 43, but we’ve trimmed it down to a more digestible 25 questions with a pass mark of 22.

Give the test a go below and let us know your score in the comments – you can also take on the challenge via the link here.

The modern theory test is proving quite challenging for some, with numerous failed attempts before finally passing. At the Sidcup test centre in South East London, one individual took a staggering 48 attempts at the theory test before eventually passing, tying for the sixth highest number of attempts in the country alongside candidates in Chelmsford and Birmingham.

One individual in Redditch, Worcestershire, holds the dubious honour of having taken 60 attempts to pass – the highest number in the country.
