Croydon crash live as man dies with major road closed and London buses diverted

A man died after a car crashed into a tree late on Wednesday evening (May 7). A Croydon road has been closed in both directions as a result.

The incident took place on Purley Road shortly after 11pm.

The A23 Purley Way has remained closed in both directions from Pampisford Road to Edgehill Road since the accident.

Traffic is currently being reported to Pampisford Road and Brighton Road while accident investigation work is being carried out. The local 289 and 439 bus routes have been diverted as a result.

Police confirmed the driver was a man in his 20s. A spokesperson for the fire brigade said one car crashed into a tree. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
