There were celebrations at a school in South London this week after it was judged ‘outstanding’ in every category by Ofsted. Inspectors spent two days at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace towards the end of the Spring Term observing lessons, speaking to students and assessing the teaching quality.

They found the Maberley Road institution provides pupils and sixth form students an education that is “second to none”. A reflective report notes young people enjoy an “aspirational curriculum” alongside an impressive array of trips and activities, preparing them “extremely well” for the next stage of their lives.

Many of the extra-curriculars, such as a visit to China, are provided free of charge, or at a reduced rate, to allow a high number to take part. A further strength is the social and health education offered, with Ofsted finding these subjects are well designed and implemented.

Pupils learn about how to keep themselves safe and healthy, and clearly understand there is no acceptance of racism, homophobia or bullying. An increasing number of pupils are also attending university, thanks in part to an emphasis on career and personal development.

Staff are said to be experts in their field who know how to present information in a relevant and accessible way. They also guarantee no child is left behind, with checks made to ensure reading weaknesses and additional needs are caught and met effectively.

Those responsible for governance were also seen to bring a great deal of expertise to the role, carrying out their roles “very effectively” as a result.

Samuel Rigby, Principal of Harris City Academy Crystal Palace, said: “We are very proud to have received such a positive report from the inspectors which rightly reflects our high academic standards as well as our focus on promoting students’ personal development. We are an ambitious school and it is heartening that the inspectors noticed the high aspirations we have for our students and how tirelessly our staff work to help them achieve their very best.

“But most pleasing is the way the inspectors commented on how hard-working, polite and courteous our students are. We are very fortunate to have such fantastic students who display such positive attitudes to their learning and, importantly, support each other to succeed.”

Until November 2020, Harris City Academy Crystal Palace was exempt from routine inspection because it was judged as outstanding for overall effectiveness at its previous inspection. Schools are no longer awarded in this manner and instead graded against the quality of education, behaviour and attitudes, personal development, leadership and management and sixth-form provision (if applicable).
