New devices will launch soon that promise to offer flagship features at a cheaper price.

Anyone thinking about splashing out on an expensive flagship phone might want to wait a few more weeks. US technology giant Qualcomm has just announced a new version of its premium Snapdragon processor that aims to bring big features to devices at a lower price for consumers.

It’s called the Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 which takes inspiration from the powerful 8 Gen 3 chip that’s found in devices such as the latest and greatest Galaxy S24 Ultra from Samsung.

The concept of this new processor is to give manufacturers the option of producing power Android devices at a reduced price point – that’s great news for consumers.

With the 8S Gen 3 tucked inside, users can expect fast performance, clever AI capabilities, improved imaging and impressive audio thanks to lossless high-definition sound. Qualcomm is also promising hyper-realistic mobile gaming with features such as accelerated Ray Tracing for smooth on-screen action.

The Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 sounds pretty mighty but it might mean users now have to do a bit of homework before buying their next device. For example, some manufacturers are still releasing phones with last year’s incredibly impressive Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor inside. Then there’s that top-tier Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and now slightly less powerful 8s Gen 3 as well.

Luckily, some devices powered by this new chip are expected to launch soon. Once those reviews come in things should be a little clearer about how good this processor actually is and how much lower the price of phones that use it will be.

“With capabilities including on-device generative AI and advanced photography features, Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 is designed to enhance user experiences, fostering creativity and productivity in their daily lives.” said Chris Patrick, senior vice president and general manager of mobile handsets, Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. “We’re elated to introduce the latest addition to our premium Snapdragon 8-series, our most premium mobile offering, bringing a host of exceptional specially selected capabilities to more consumers.”

Qualcomm has confirmed that Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 will be adopted by key makers including Honor, iQOO, realme, Redmi and Xiaomi. The first devices powered by it are expected to be announced in March

“We’re thrilled to collaborate with Qualcomm Technologies to introduce the first device powered by Snapdragon 8s Gen 3 – coming soon,” said William Lu, Partner and President of Xiaomi Corporation, President of the International Business Department, GM of Xiaomi Brand. “This new mobile platform will allow us to provide our customers with a personalized premium experience, all thanks to generative AI.”
