Tottenham Hotspur’s long wait for a trophy is finally over, with the club lifting the Europa League on Wednesday night.
A 1-0 win over Premier League rivals Manchester United saw Spurs crowned as Europa League Champions. As well as the silverware, Spurs have also booked themselves a place in next season’s Europa League.
The Spurs squad will be making their way back to England with the winners’ medals around their necks.
UEFA’s rules confirm that the winning team is presented with 50 gold medals, while the runners-up get 50 silver medals.
Ahead of the trophy presentation, UEFA prepared 30 medals to give out to the Spurs squad on the pitch. Amog those to get a medal were injured trio James addison Timo Werner and Lucas Bergvall as well as youngster Will Lankshear, who spent the second half of the season on loan with West Bromwich Albion.
However, it was noticed that Son Heung-min, Cristian Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur weren’t given a medal during the trophy presentation. After, UEFA issued a statement.
“To our great displeasure, we did not have enough medals available on stage during the trophy ceremony presentation due to an unexpected discrepancy in the player count, as more team members – including injured players – participated in the ceremony than initially anticipated,” they said, via BBC Sport .
“The missing medals were promptly delivered to the winning team in the dressing room, along with our sincerest apologies for the oversight.”
It is at the discretion of each club as to how the 50 medals awarded are given out to players and staff.
As well as the medals, Spurs were also able to lift the Europa League trophy. However, UEFA will now keep hold of the original trophy, with Spurs instead given a full-size replica.
