Job interviews can be tricky, especially if you feel underqualified, but one expert has shared how to make sure you’re successful every time thanks to some simple tricks

There’s nothing more daunting than a job interview, especially if you feel underqualified – but here’s how you can nail it according to a careers advisor.

Putting yourself forward for an interview takes courage, so when you get to the nail-biting moment of being asked the all-important questions by a potential, Erin McGoff, a careers and life advisor has shared how to make sure you succeed every time.

She took to TikTok to share some tips, including urging candidates to always apply for roles, even if they don’t meet all of the job description criteria, as well as never feeling like they are wasting an interviewer’s time.

The life guru told candidates to focus on any “transferable skills” they have that would be useful in the job, rather than admitting they don’t think you have enough experience. She gave an example of how not to respond to a question asked about being a good fit for the role.

She urged people to avoid saying things such as: “I’m not, I’m underqualified. I don’t have more than three years experience I’ve only worked for tiny companies, I don’t even know a lot about TV production.” Instead, she reassured candidates they wouldn’t have been offered the interview if the employer didn’t think they were suitable.

Erin then suggested answering this question instead with the qualities you do have and told people that if they “meet 100 per cent of the job description, they are probably overqualified” and added: “Focus on your soft and transferable skills and especially your unique offering. What do you have that other candidates might not?”

Her interview tips were praised by job hunters online, as many shared their experiences. One TikTok user wrote: “Went into a job in media after being a teacher. Soft skills and examples of leadership go a long way!” While another said: “Almost every job I’ve had I have been underqualified for.”

A third penned: “Just happened to me and I got the job. I thought I wasn’t qualified because I don’t have a BA but a huge portion of the job is customer service and I have amazing customer service.” Another inspirationally commented: “Positive self-talk works the same way negative self-talk does, so if you tell yourself you’re amazing and qualified you’ll truly feel it!”
