Florian Wirtz is going to be a player in high demand during the summer transfer window.
The 22-year-old has enjoyed another fine season with Bayer Leverkusen, netting 16 goals and laying on 15 assists in 44 matches for Xabi Alonso’s side.
Wirtz was at the heart of the Leverkusen side that went unbeaten last season and while they have not quite managed to maintain that incredible form, they have finished as runners-up to Bayern Munich this season.
Wirtz is one of Leverkusen’s star players, but there is a feeling he will leave this summer after five years with the club.
Bayern Munich looked to be leading the race to sign him, but Leverkusen would prefer to sell outside the Bundesliga and that’s where Arsenal and other Premier League clubs come in.
The Gunners have been linked with a move for the attacking midfielder in the past and are likely to be named as a potential destination this summer. Reports from Get German Football news suggest Wirtz’s representatives have spoken to four European clubs already, with Liverpool named as one of those.
Arsenal may not have made their move just yet, with Real Madrid and Manchester City heavily linked with the 22-year-old at the moment.
In fact, fresh reports have emerged suggesting that City have already made an offer to sign Wirtz this summer while other reports have said Pep Guardiola’s side have a “verbal agreement” to sign him.
New Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta will be tasked with handing Mikel Arteta a stronger squad for another tilt at the Premier League title next season.
The Gunners will be in the market for a new striker, with Viktor Gyokeres once again heavily linked. Martin Zubimendi is expected to sign in the midfield, but the Gunners have been looking at attacking midfield and wide players too.
