A long-running sports channel is shutting its doors later this month leaving Freeview and Sky users with one less service to watch.

Those using popular Freeview and Sky TV platforms will find one channel missing later this month. It’s been confirmed that a long-running sports service will shut down for good on March 31 with the team behind the channel announcing the news with “inevitable sadness”.

SportyStuff TV has been broadcasting action for around 12 years with viewers currently able to watch content including greyhound racing, US Motor Sport action and exciting racing from the European Rally Championships.

Sadly, from April 1 things will cease and SportyStuff TV will end its output.

“This brings to a close 12 years of service provided by the Company to shareholders and viewers,” said Kevan Moretti, SportyStuff TV’s chairman & CEO in an update on the firm’s website.

“We would especially like to thank SportyStuffTV’s production staff, presenters, guests, crew, and suppliers for their continued support throughout.

“With inevitable sadness today, there is also much to be proud of and it is regrettable that external circumstances beyond our control have brought about this closure. 2023 was the Company’s most successful year of trading, so we leave now at the top of our game.”

The TV landscape has changed dramatically over the past decade with more homes now streaming content along with viewing action via social media platforms and YouTube.

Competition is also fierce although it’s not clear if this is why SportyStuff TV has decided to close its doors.

The end of this channel is bad news for sports fans but there is something new coming next week for people who love documentary-style programmes.

The GREAT! Network, which already has a number of free-to-view services, has just announced the launch of a new channel that will be available on TVs from March 20.

Called GREAT! Real, it will show purely unscripted content. That means Freview and Sky users will get access to shows such as Heathrow: Britain’s Busiest Airport, Island Medics, Emergency Rescue: Air, Paddington Station 24/7 and Coast Guard Alaska.

“With an array of gripping observational series focusing on dramatic real-life events and moving human stories, brand-new free channel GREAT! Real gives TV audiences a compelling, behind-the-scenes insight into the lives of real-life heroes,” said GREAT!.

“Launching on Sky and Freeview on 20th March 2024, free channel GREAT! Real offers an unprecedented view of the real lives of on call medics and police patrols to coastal rescue missions and airport operations.”
