Hospice nurse Julie McFadden, from Los Angeles, claims pets know when their owner is about to die and often copy their owner’s symptoms to show their devastation about what’s happeneing

As dogs do not live as long as humans, you expect to outlive your pet and suffer the heartache that comes with losing them. But it doesn’t always happen this way around, as sometimes a dog outlives their owner leaving the pet to mourn their loss instead.

However, hospice nurse Julie McFadden, 41, claims dogs are not blindsided by their owner’s death when they pass away from natural causes, as they can ‘sense’ their health issues. In a heartbreaking TikTok video, she said: “As a hospice nurse, not only do I think animals grieve but I think they know when their owners are dying.

“I have seen animals, pets, protecting their owners who are dying by lying in bed with them, licking them to try to comfort them, cuddling them, sleeping under their bed, never leaving their owner’s side.” Tragically, Julie has also seen pets “take on their owner’s symptoms” – having nausea, vomiting, fatigue, limping or refusing to walk when their owner couldn’t walk, as well as refusing food like their owners.

She added: “It makes me want to cry. I have seen them howl, making noises when their owners were dying. Animals are more connected than we ever could know.” Commenting on her post, one user said: “My grandma’s dog howled when she passed.”

Another user added: “I took my husband’s dog in every day when he was in hospice. I could see him detach himself from her slowly and she became more attached to me. But after he died, she would run to the back door and cry for him at the same time every day for a couple of months. It was heartbreaking.”

A third user said: “My friend’s dog died four days after she died. The dog was only four-years-old and healthy. Strangest thing ever.” One more user said: “My yorkies lost all kinds of weight after my husband passed. His cat hid for weeks and lost weight also.”
