England have clinched back-to-back European titles as the Lionesses narrowly defeated Spain in a nail-biting Euro 2025 final, winning on penalties to retain the crown they first won three years ago.

Sarina Wiegman’s squad entered the tournament in Switzerland as one of the favourites and didn’t disappoint, making it all the way to Sunday’s grand finale where they exacted revenge for their 2023 World Cup defeat to Spain by overcoming the world champions 3-1 on penalties.

Chloe Kelly – England’s hero in the Euro 2022 final – netted the decisive penalty after being brought on from the bench just before half-time to replace the struggling Lauren James.

However, Wiegman’s choice to start James, who was battling an ankle injury, on the left flank was labelled a “massive risk” by Ian Wright, who was providing punditry for ITV.

“Massive risk,” Wright commented during his pre-match analysis of James’ selection, via the Mirror. “I think she’s [Wiegman] wasted a sub there.”

“She’s obviously not right and not only that, she’s put her on the other side. I said she should have been in the centre, not on the left side! Having to chase back Ona Batlle and chase back Aitana Bonmati when you’re half fit. I think that’s a massive mistake.”

Despite Wright’s concerns proving correct with James having to be substituted shortly before the break, he needn’t have fretted about the England strategy.

Sarina Wiegman’s legends have made history and brought football home once more after defending their title and winning Euro 2025 in Switzerland.

Kelly has excelled in her impact substitute role for England throughout the competition, with her introduction from the bench proving to be the turning point for yet another memorable evening for the Lionesses.

It was her delivery from the left flank that found the head of Alessia Russo, who guided the ball home to send the match into extra-time. The 27 year old Arsenal forward then displayed remarkable composure when she stepped forward to convert the decisive spot-kick.

Kelly received special praise from Wiegman following the match, with the manager applauding her resilience in returning to peak form after a difficult spell.

Speaking about Kelly, she remarked: “Every player has their own story. Every story is incredible. Her story is out in the open and I’m so happy for her. She has been fighting to come back to her highest level. She really wanted to take that penalty. To be able to score it under that pressure is incredible.”
