JD Gyms is poised to open its 100th UK gym, as the chain flexes its muscles in the 24-hour fitness sector and eyes further growth.
The Wigan-based chain, a part of the global retail group JD Sports Fashion, will celebrate this milestone with the inauguration of a new gym in Enfield, north London, this November.
It has plans for two additional openings before the year’s end, and aims to launch 10 to 15 new gyms in 2026.
Launched in 2014, the brand has a significant presence across the North of England, but believes the new Enfield location will pave the way for future expansion across Greater London.
A £21 million investment programme over the past financial year has seen upgrades to gym floor equipment and most sites converted to 24-hour operation.
JD Gyms is among the newer chains capitalising on the demand for low-cost, contract-free memberships at round-the-clock gyms.
Competitor PureGym recently announced plans to open up to 60 new UK gyms next year, noting that more people are prioritising their health but seeking value for money.
JD Gyms disclosed a 20% increase in revenues to £122 million in the year to February, compared with the previous year, according to its latest accounts.
Its pre-adjustment profit soared by 42% year-on-year to £42.1 million.
Membership swelled by nearly 40,000 to a total of 572,000 at the close of the financial year.
Alun Peacock, chief executive of JD Gyms, said: “Since opening our first gym in Hull in 2014, we have remained focused on exceeding member expectations.
“Our ongoing investment into opening multiple new sites across the UK, refurbishing our existing gyms with the latest premium equipment, upgrading facilities and converting the majority of our gyms to 24-hour operations, has all contributed towards these outstanding results.
“We are excited about the future with multiple new locations already identified for future growth.”
