Before she joined the Royal Family in 2011, Kate, Princess of Wales worked normal jobs just like anyone else – starting out at her family’s business before working as a personal assistant

Before she joined the Royal Family, Kate, Princess of Wales held two, rather normal jobs before she married Prince William.

After Kate graduated from St Andrews in 2005, she worked for her family’s business – Party Pieces – which sold party supplies. Afterward, she earned a part-time job as an accessories buyer with British retailer Jigsaw.

While the job title sounds impressive, it was similar to being a personal assistant. Her tasks included running errands, making tea and bringing snacks to the talent on the set of photo shoots.

During a 2008 interview with the Evening Standard, Belle Robinson, who co-founded the brand with John Robinson, talked about Kate’s work ethic and already royal demeanour. While she was working at Jigsaw, the Princess was dating Prince William at the time, so dealt with certain aspects of fame such as paparazzi.

Belle said: “There were days when there were TV crews at the end of the drive. We’d say: ‘Listen, do you want to go out the back way?’ And she’d say: ‘To be honest, they’re going to hound us until they’ve got the picture. So why don’t I just go, get the picture done, and then they’ll leave us alone.'”

She added: “I thought she was very mature for a 26-year-old, and I think she’s been quite good at neither courting the press nor sticking two fingers in the air at them. I don’t think I would have been so polite.”

Belle added: “She sat in the kitchen at lunchtime and chatted with everyone from the van drivers to the accounts girls. She wasn’t precious.”

Now married to Prince William with three Children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – Kate’s job is to attend a variety of royal engagements – across the UK and abroad. While she hasn’t undertaken any so far in 2024 due to her abdominal operation, the Princess of Wales carried out 128 royal engagements in 2023.

However, Princess Kate has had two important roles since joining the Royal Family, according to an expert – and has already completed one.

The Princess of Wales is currently learning everything she can about royal life to prepare herself to become Queen Consort when Prince William takes the throne. Kate will follow in the footsteps of Queen Camilla to support the King while he acts as Monarch.

According to royal correspondent Katie Nicholl, Kate’s position of Queen-in-waiting consists of two main roles – and she’s already succeeded in one as a mother. The princess, 42, will continue to train for the second until her husband’s coronation when William is crowned the King of England.

In her 2020 book True Royalty’s Kate: The Making of a Future Queen, Katie explained: “There are two roles to a future Queen. One is to produce heirs, which she has done, and the other is to learn how to one day become Queen and that is very much what we are seeing. We are seeing a Queen-in-waiting.”
