Lamine Yamal has teased a Barcelona move for Nico Williams. Arsenal have been among the front-runners in the race for the Athletic Bilbao star, with Mikel Arteta eager to bolster his attacking options — an area that looked short at times last season.

The 22-year-old Spanish international has emerged as a top target football.london understands that Arteta is a long-time admirer. The Gunners are reportedly willing to meet Williams’ £49million release clause.

However, Barcelona have now entered the fray. Reports from Spain claim that Catalan giants met with Williams on Friday to discuss a potential transfer to Hansi Flick’s squad.

Shortly after news of those talks surfaced, Barcelona wonderkid Yamal shared an Instagram story showing him celebrating with Williams during international duty — a subtle but pointed message of support.

It’s no secret that Williams has close friends within the Barcelona dressing room, and reports in Spain suggest he would prefer to remain in La Liga if the right opportunity comes along. His current club, Athletic Bilbao, are still hopeful of extending his contract, which runs until June 2027.

“I believe we have a winning and interesting project for everyone, and Nico is part of that project, just like many other players,” said Bilbao president Jon Uriarte, speaking to El Correo.

“The project becomes easier if we keep our players, and I believe Nico and the rest of the squad have a very exciting year ahead.”

According to Sport, Williams is open to joining Barcelona — but only if the club can activate his release clause and ensure a smooth registration process.

Financial complications have plagued Barca in recent windows, with Dani Olmo’s transfer previously at risk due to player registration issues.

Arteta will be hoping Barcelona prioritise signing Liverpool’s Luis Diaz instead, with the Colombian international also high on their shortlist. Should the La Liga champions pursue Diaz over Williams, Arsenal may yet find a clear path to finally landing one of their top targets.
