You could be making a huge mistake with your towels that might be causing mould to grow in your bathroom in as little as 12 hours – but experts say there’s an easy fix

Your towels could be the cause of your mouldy bathroom.

The bathroom is one of the hardest areas to keep free from mould. There’s so much humidity and water in the room that it’s the perfect breeding ground for mould and the only way to keep the room completely clear is to get rid of excess water as quickly as possible by opening windows and keeping the room ventilated, as well as wiping down your shower.

But it turns out that even if you do all of that, you could still be causing mould to grow in as little as 12 hours with one “common mistake” people make with their towels.

Many of us think nothing of hanging up our towel in the bathroom once we’ve used it to dry off, but according to the experts from Advanced Damp, this could be a huge problem. The experts said: “One of the most common mistakes that lead to mould is how you handle wet towels. Hanging wet towels on a rail could start growing mould in just 12 hours.”

Instead, you should make sure to hang your towels somewhere with lots of airflow, so that they can dry as quickly as possible, The Express reports. “When you’re finished using, dry towels quickly and hang them up in a place with plenty of air.” The experts added, “This simple move will help keep mould away.”

Towels can also become susceptible to mould after you’ve washed them if you don’t take adequate steps to ensure they’re fully dry before storing them. Advanced Damp explained: “You should also ensure that the towels are dry before you put them in the washing basket – otherwise, it could spread to other clothes and parts of your home.”

For the best chances of combating mould, ventilation is key. The experts said you should try to have an extractor fan installed where possible, or at least open a window as soon as you’ve finished in the shower or bath. The experts said: “Ensuring good ventilation may not help you reduce energy costs, but it keeps the indoor air quality healthy for everyone living there.”
