The M1 in Hertfordshire had to be closed southbound between Junction 6 (St Albans) and J5 (Watford) due to a multi-vehicle collision on Friday evening (May 2). Emergency services rushed to the scene with a full diversion route in place.
There were reports of severe delays with congestion tailing back to Junction 8 (Hemel Hempstead), with the opposite side back to Junction 4 ( Edgware ). National Highways urged drivers on Friday to re-route or even delay journeys where possible.
It is understood the crash happened shortly before 5pm on Friday (May 2), with an air ambulance landing on the carriageway. A driver caught up in the delays reports seeing at least six fire engines, five ambulances and 10 plus police cars.
