Man, 72, stabbed to death in Wembley named for first time as another 72-year-old charged with murder

A 72-year-old has appeared in court charged with murder following the stabbing of another 72-year-old in Wembley. Richard Brathwaite was killed on Thursday, March 21.

Police were called to Cromwell Road, where the incident happened just before midday. Richard was pronounced dead at the scene and his next of kin have been informed. They are being supported by specialist officers.

Derek Brown, 72, of Cromwell Road, Wembley appeared in custody at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on Saturday (March 23) charged with murder, section 18 GBH with intent and possession of a bladed article in a public place. He was remanded in custody to next appear at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, March 26.

A special post-mortem examination took place on Saturday, March 23 and gave cause of death as a stab injury. A woman, aged in her 70s, also suffered injuries during the incident – her injuries were not life threatening.

Detective Inspector Jonny Newell said on Friday, March 22: “While we retain an open mind concerning motive, I want to confirm that we believe this was an isolated incident and we aren’t currently seeking any further suspects at this time. This incident took place on the street at Cromwell Road and I urge anyone who witnessed it, or has dash cam or doorbell footage to get in touch straight away.

“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones.” There will be a more visible police presence in the area in coming days.
