Jacket potatoes are delicious but time consuming as they can take 90 minutes – or longer – to bake, but one cook has shared how you can whip one up in just 10 minutes

Sometimes there’s nothing better than a humble jacket potato paired with all of your favourite toppings – and now one cook has shared how you can rustle one up in just 10 minutes.

One of the biggest of reasons people avoid plumping for the humble baked potato is because of long they take to cook. But home chef Josh Elkin has shared his easy 10-minute method on his TikTok page and has astonished his fans.

He proves how cooking them in a microwave is far quicker than the oven or air fryer, and you’re still guaranteed a fluffy baked inside ready for lashings of butter.

To start off with, the self-taught chef washed the potato to remove any dirt, and then used a fork to pierce holes all over it. He then microwaved it for five minutes, before turning it over and microwaving for another five minutes.

Josh then removed the potato from the microwave, sliced the top off and showed how fluffy it was inside. He then demonstrated how to “evenly distribute” the butter throughout the potato. Sharing his top tip, Josh made diagonal cuts into the spud, not cutting all the way through, turned it to the side and made further diagonal cuts going the opposite way.

He explained: “Then you end up getting this diagonal cut pattern. That’s how to make a baked potato in 10 minutes with even butter distribution.”

Fans were quick to praise the method, with many calling it a “game changer”. One TikToker commented: “I love it. Total game changer,” while a second said: “OMG!!! I love it.”

A third penned: “The slicing technique is life changing,” and another advised: “I actually tried it.. it’s so GOOD. I recomend 6 minutes though..to be even softer.”

The good thing with potatoes is they can last for a while in your cupboard, but what’s the best way to store them? One woman caused a huge debate after she highlighed a “strange symbol” on her packet of potatoes and wondered how you’re meant to store them.

TikToker @bethking61 admitted she always thought they should be kept in a cupboard, but she revealed how she found instructions on the packet to put them in the frigde instead. Zooming in on the corner of her bag of white potatoes, she highlighted a fridge symbol, accompanied by the words: “At home store below 5°C.”

Firm in the belief the veg should always be stored in a cupboard, she was baffled by the discovery, and it seemed as if she wasn’t alone as several viewers said the same. “Surely no?” the foodie wrote in the video showing off her discovery. She also questioned: “Does anyone else keep their potatoes in the fridge? Is this NEW? Is my whole life a lie…”

Her caption added: “Maybe i have been living under a rock but i always thought they belonged in a dark cupboard.” Unfortunately, there was no clear cut answer; while some commenters were proud to be team cupboard, others revealed they’ve been converted to team fridge.
