Arsenal transfer target Martin Zubimendi has taken to social media after playing what could have been his final home game for Real Sociedad this weekend.
The midfielder turned down a move to Liverpool to remain with the Spanish club last summer, but as reported by football.london a deal that will see him move to Arsenal this summer is in a good place.
There are widespread reports that an agreement has been reached in principle over a transfer.
Zubimendi has a £51 million release clause in his contract with Real Sociedad with the funds firstly going to La Liga before being passed on to Real.
The 26-year-old has played 35 times in La Liga so far this season and has been a key player for his club in the defensive midfield role.
His latest appearance came on Sunday as he played the full 90 minutes of the 3-2 home win against Girona. A 91st minute goal from Arkaitz Mariezkurrena was the difference between the two sides.
The game was Real’s last home game of the current season. They are, however, back in action next Saturday when they finish their campaign with an away trip to take on Real Madrid.
It is claimed that Real fans pleaded with Zubimendi to stay at the club beyond the summer with shouts of “Zubi, stay! Zubi, stay!” at full time of the game. The midfielder reportedly applauded the supporters before heading down the tunnel.
He has since taken to social media to share a message on his Instagram story. He firstly shared a post from Real’s official account showing a pre-match display in tribute to manager Imanol Alguacil, as well as a squad photo from after full-time, Zubimendi added a blue heart to the post.
He then shared a picture of his current manager, as well as another picture of himself looking towards the stands and smiling.
Speaking earlier this month, Zubimendi hinted that he could be moving on from Real, where he has spent his entire career so far, in the simmer.
“We get used to so many good things happening to me, but sometimes you have to slow down, look back and realise everything you’re experiencing and everything you’ve achieved,” he said.
“Luckily, I’ve had the chance to experience many good things with Real Sociedad, many dreams come true. “Europa League, Champions League, a title.
“I couldn’t ask for more.”
