One woman, whose neighbours think she’s lost the plot, has asked whether she’s the only one who hoovers her lawn – and it’s turned out to be quite a divisive topic

Homeowners will know how important it is to get your garden ready for spring and summer, but one woman has taken her preparation to a whole new level.

With the warmer weather approaching many people who are lucky enough to have a garden will be preparing their lawns – whether that be mowing it, killing weeds or getting rid of stubborn moss on paving stones. But one woman swears by vacuuming her lawn – and it hasn’t gone unnoticed by her neighbours.

Content creator Sherell Abbott shared her unusual method with her 106,000 followers on Instagram, and explained that her neighbours think she’s “lost the plot”. In the caption, Sherell wrote: “It’s that time of year again! I’ve officially lost the plot hoovering my grass! Am I the only one?”

In the video, Sherell can be seen vacuuming her lawn, which looks to be synthetic turf. Then she starts pulling out weeds from the gravel in her garden, spraying her paving stones and watering the hedge. While some were baffled at her behaviour, many admitted they could relate to her.

One person wrote: “I vacuum our Astro turf, my friends find it odd but … it is what it is. We keep a spare old vacuum in the garden shed for that purpose!” while another added: “I love hoovering my grass!”

“You go girl!!! F what the neighbours think! We’re keeping our homes clean inside and out,” commented a third. However, someone else admitted: “I remember the first time I saw my neighbour hoovering his patio… I thought he’d lost his mind!”

Another warned: “You should refrain from using a vacuum cleaner on your synthetic turf, as the suction will remove the infill sand from the grass area. As beautiful as the results are, a soft leaf blower is probably a better idea. Happy spring cleaning.”

According to Install It Direct, there are two major concerns with vacuuming artificial grass. The first is that you risk vacuuming up your infill, which “is an integral part of your lawn and is what gives it that soft, cushiony feel that is similar to natural grass”. Another concern is that if used regularly, the possible suction from a powerful vacuum could loosen the synthetic turf, which “could cause shifting or sagging and would require repair”.
