Manchester United believed they had taken the lead against Chelsea through Harry Maguire, but VAR ruled the goal out for offside at Stamford Bridge.
The United defender was fed by captain Bruno Fernandes, whose cross was finished off brilliantly by the outstretched foot of Maguire.
Despite jubilant celebrations from the visitors and their travelling fans, VAR was called upon to review the incident.
The goal was quickly disallowed after replays showed that Maguire had timed his run just slightly early.
Taking to X to explain the decision, the Premier League Match Centre explained: “VAR checked the referee’s call of goal – and determined that Maguire was in an offside position and recommended that the goal was disallowed.”
During the Sky Sports commentary, Rob Hawthorne said: “VAR checking the fine lines here. Is that lean from Maguire just going to count against him.”
Alan Smith added: “He was on the front foot ready to go and the Chelsea defenders just trying to hold that line.
“It was a good line just along the edge of the box.”
Hawthorne continued: “And Chelsea’s mood is lifted as the goal does not count.
“Maguire’s effort is ruled out. This is how close it was. Offside by the shoulder.
Smith concluded: “That semi-automated is a move for the better, for the good. More accurate.”
A win for Enzo Maresca’s side would see them leapfrog Manchester City into fifth place and secure a Champions League spot.
At the time of writing, Aston Villa are leading against Tottenham, and a win would see the Blues draw level on 66 points with Unai Emery’s side.
