A royal commentator has said Prince Harry and Meghan Markle ‘don’t need’ Princess Anne to try and ‘lure them back’ – arguing that Harry will return to the UK anyway

The Royal Family should not try and “lure back” Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, a royal commentator has said.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have grown apart from the rest of the Royal Family since moving to America and stepping down from royal duties. The rift was hardened when the couple made explosive claims about The Firm in both their Oprah Winfrey interview and their Netflix docuseries.

Last year, 39-year-old Harry added fuel to the fire with the release of his memoir Spare, in which he fired shots at several members of his family. Things were made even worse when royal author – and former friend of 42-year-old Meghan – Omid Scobie launched his book Endgame, in which he revealed details about the royal race row.

Columnist Sarah Vine previously argued that Harry’s aunt – 73-year-old Princess Anne – could be “the answer to all the Royal Family’s problems”. Writing in The Daily Mail, she said: “If I were the King I’d say ‘Anne, please just go and deal with them,” adding: “If you got a call from Princess Anne you’d sit up jolly straight”.

However, royal commentator Gareth Russell has snapped back. Speaking to GB News, Gareth argued that the Sussexes “don’t need” a member of the Royal Family to check up on them, adding it would not go down well with the British public.

“It would give the impression that they’re trying to lure him back,” he said, adding: “I don’t think that would be a hugely popular impression with many people in Britain.”

In a recent interview, the Duke of Sussex spoke lovingly about his family and promised to make an effort to make more trips to the UK in the near future. His presence would probably be appreciated by the royals, who have endured a tricky few months. King Charles announced he had cancer in February and the whereabouts of the Princess of Wales has become the subject of increasing online speculation since she stepped back from royal duties in January.

Gareth reckons Harry’s return to the UK will be the key to the family’s reconciliation. He said: “If there is going to be a reconciliation, it does make more sense for Prince Harry to be spending more time in the United Kingdom.” Adding: “I think the way to do that is for him to be here more often, which is what he says he wants to do.”
