Princess Anne’s cheeky request to Mike Tindall before his wedding got refused

Mike Tindall is known to get on very well with his mother-in-law Princess Anne – and he has shared some surprising stories about Zara’s mum, including her unusual wedding request

Mike Tindall has revealed that his mother-in-law Princess Anne once made a cheeky request ahead of his wedding to Zara.

Former rugby star Mike married Zara in July 2001. They have since gone on to welcome three children together, Mia, ten, Lena, five, and three-year-old Lucas.

And according to Mike, Princess Anne actually asked him to get a nose job prior to his wedding day.

In the run-up to their nuptials, Mike told producers and crew on the set of Sky One’s A League of Their Own that his future mother-in-law had asked him to have corrective surgery. The rugby pro had broken his nose at least eight times during his sporting career.

But he politely turned down Anne’s request to have it straightened since the surgery would have interfered with his training schedule at the time.

Mike later defended Anne’s remark while speaking to the Radio Times in November 2011, after his wedding, saying “it was a light-hearted, jokey comment. “It wasn’t a big deal, and look at my nose – can you blame her?!”

Mike previously opened up about his close bond with his mother-in-law during his appearance in the I’m A Celebrity jungle in 2022.

He told his campmates: “Zara had like a 30th birthday, it was a disco 70s-themed one. I was dancing on the dance floor, I had like flares on, full outfit but it was quite tight, nothing ever fits – rugby player’s bum and legs – so I was dancing with my mother-in-law and I did a [expletive] drop in front of my mother-in-law. Ripped my trousers, straight in front of her.

“It happened to be that my boxers that I had on at that time said ‘nibble my nuts.’ As I’ve turned round, she’s [Anne] gone, ‘I’d rather not.’ I’ve gone, ‘Yeah I’m going’ and walked off.”

It comes after Mike landed himself in hot water after revealing his cheeky nickname for Zara’s cousin, Prince William. The slip occurred during a special podcast episode recorded by Mike and Zara with Rugby League star Rob Burrow, who is battling Motor Neurone Disease.

In the midst of their conversation, they touched on whether they had any pet names for each other or other Royals including William, Kate, King Charles, or Queen Camilla.

Mike laughed as he spoke about William: “For the Prince of Wales, he is known as ‘One Pint Willy’. He is known to me as One Pint Willy because he is not the best of drinkers, coming from a sport where it is built on the social aspect and a couple of beers being sunk quite often. That is one I will definitely give away for the Prince of Wales.”

But the fun didn’t last long as Zara, chuckling, gave her husband a heads-up: “Oh my god. You are in so much trouble!”

But William saw the funny side when he presented Rob and his former teammate Kevin Sinfield with their CBEs for their incredible work raising funds and awareness for motor neurone disease.

During the encounter, Rob mentioned the nicknames Mike had revealed on his podcast, which led to a light-hearted exchange with the Prince.

William chuckled and remarked: “It was you who got the nicknames out of him – he apologised to me about that. When I saw him, I said ‘Mike, when you say you’re not going to mention your nicknames doesn’t mean you mention mine, it’s not fair’. I’m sure it’s quite fun with Mike!”
