Rafael Leao to Arsenal transfer upgrade chance as Barcelona make Gabriel Martinelli decision

Arsenal could be handed an unexpected lifeline in the pursuit of AC Milan winger Rafael Leao after Barcelona have reportedly begun looking at Gabriel Martinelli this summer.

The Gunners were thrust into the race to sign Leao this week when Footmercato claimed that new sporting director Andrea Berta had rung the Portuguese winger to confirm interest in him. The 25-year-old bagged 12 goals and 13 assists this season for Milan but ultimately the season ended in failure to qualify for Europe.

AC now find themselves in a period of transition with Max Allegri arriving to spearhead the rebuild. It is claimed that Leao is not currently a priority for the Gunners and Allegri sees him as a key leader in his new vision for the San Siro club.

However, Arsenal could return with more solid interest if Martinelli was to leave the Emirates Stadium. Sport understands that Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford is Barcelona’s top target for a new wing recruit and Liverpool’s Luis Diaz is also a player of interest.

But, should they be unable to do business for the duo, Barca could look elsewhere and Arsenal’s Martinelli would be an option. It is believed that the Catalan club see the Brazilian as having a similar profile to the one they want and would be prepared to move for Martinelli if they need to.

Should this scenario play out, the Gunners would then find themselves in a strong position to move for Leao. Arsenal could offer him a position where he would replace a key member of the team and the opportunity to play Champions League football next season.

As mentioned though, Arsenal would need to get past Allegri first. Reports in Italy have suggested that AC have made it clear that Leao is not for sale and with three years remaining on his deal, they can afford to drive a hard bargain.
