Sir Keir Starmer has hinted that if England clinches the Euro 2024 title in their clash against Spain, celebrations need to be marked ‘in some way’.
Gareth Southgate’s squad, despite facing criticism over their initial performances, have fuelled the nation’s hopes for a trophy by storming into their second consecutive Euros final. With the prospect of triumph looming, discussions about a nationwide day off have emerged as a means to honour what could be a historic achievement.
While chatting with ITV Sport, the Prime Minister weighed in on the buzz surrounding a potential reactionary Bank Holiday.
“I don’t know. Let’s get through the next few hours, get the hands on the trophy,” he remarked. “We’ll need to mark it in some way, we’d have to see what that is. An appropriate way.”
The Three Lions started their campaign with a victory over Serbia, and then secured draws against Denmark and Slovenia. A dramatic extra time win over Slovakia, where they were saved by a late Jude Bellingham equaliser was followed by a penalty shootout victory over Switzerland. They then earned their first win within normal time since June 16 against the Netherlands in Wednesdays semi-final thanks to Ollie Watkins’ late goal.
“It’s been an amazing 10 days, to have a Labour government and to hit the ground running, we’ve tried to get across a sense of service but electoral victories don’t drop from the sky, we had to work for it and so did the England manager,” Sir Keir revealed to Gary Neville.

Starmer has praised England’s journey to the final, emphasising that luck isn’t the only factor: “You don’t get to a final just by luck, it’s talent, skill, strategy and I just desperately hope now we get that win this evening.”
Discussing parallels with his own experiences and the national team’s criticism, Starmer shared: “I can totally relate to that. When I started as Labour leader people said you’re not going get it over the line, we weren’t going quick enough, we’ll never get a Labour government.”
He continued his support for Southgate saying, “Gareth obviously started this with people saying it wasn’t good enough. I always said from the get-go this is a fantastic squad, a fantastic manager who can get the best out of them so I’m really, really pleased to get this far, we should be proud of them, we’re all proud, the whole country is behind them.”
