Sewer cleaning, bridge safety inspections and water mains being upgraded are among the works set to close or disrupt traffic on roads across Merton over the next four months.
A number of planned roadworks will cause traffic disruption and road closures in Merton throughout May, June, July, and August. Affected areas will include Morden, Mitcham, Raynes Park, and Wimbledon.
Several organisations will carry out the planned works, including Merton Council, SGS, TfL, and Thames Water. You can see a full list by area below.
Colliers Wood
Cavendish Road (In progress) – Road closures will be in place with localised diversions to enable repairs to a void in the carriageway and a collapsed sewer pipe – April 17 to May 8.
Mitcham
A216 Streatham Road (In progress) – Multi-way or two-way lights will move along the road as needed, between Locks Lane/London Road and the borough boundary – September 23, 2024, to July 24, 2025.
A216 Streatham Road – Multi-way lights will be in place at the junction with Links Road and The Bungalows to install a water meter – May 9 to May 20.
2217 Holborn Way (In progress) – Lane closures will be in place on the approach to Western Road, Raleigh Gardens, and Upper Green West for mains replacement works – April 22 to May 22.
A217 Raleigh Gardens (In progress) – Lane closures will be in place on the approach to Western Road and Upper Green West for mains replacement works – February 25 to June 17.
A217 London Road – Lane closures will be in place between Cricket Green and Baron Grove for mains replacement works – June 30 to July 25.
A236 Upper Green East – Lane closures will be in place at the junction with London Road and Upper Green West for mains replacement works. A closure will be required for the bus lane section of London Road; normal through traffic will not be affected – May 12 to May 23.
A236 Upper Green West – Lane closures will be in place at the junction with Holborn Way and Raleigh Gardens for mains replacement works – April 7 to April 30.
A236 Western Road (In progress) – Temporary traffic lights will be in place to enable water mains replacement works between Bond Road and Raleigh Gardens – November 12, 2024, to May 12, 2025.
A236 Croydon Road – A road closure will be in place to enable carriageway resurfacing between Beddington Lane and Carshalton Road, with a diversion via Windmill Road and Commonside East – July 14 to July 18, with night works between 20:00 and 05:00.
A237 Carshalton Road – Temporary traffic lights will be in place to enable the installation of new street lighting cables. An intelligent light system will monitor traffic flows – June 6 to June 9.
A237 Carshalton Road – Road closures will be in place to enable carriageway resurfacing between Mitcham Junction Station and Cranmer Road. A diversion will be via Goat Road, Middleton Road, Bishopsford Road, and London Road – July 28 to July 29, with night works between 20:00 and 05:00.
A239 Cricket Green – Temporary lights will be in place at the junction with Bramcote Avenue to enable water mains replacement works – May 27 to June 9.
Bramcote Avenue – Road closures will be in place at the junction with Cricket Green to enable water main replacements. Resident access will be provided via Mitcham Park – May 27 to June 9.
Morden
A217 Bishopsford Road and Lilleshall Road – Temporary traffic lights will be in place at the junction to enable the installation of upgraded telecoms equipment – July 28 to July 31 and August 26 to August 29.
B286 Aberconway Road – Road closures between Morden Hall Road and A24 London Road will be in place to repair a collapsed sewer section. Access will be maintained for residents and businesses; there will be no through traffic – May 24 to June 6.
Easby Crescent – Road closures will be in place to enable carriageway resurfacing works. Access will be supported for residents where possible, with local diversions for all other traffic – May 28 to May 29.
Green Lane – Road closures will be in place between Middleton Road and Central Road for resurfacing. A diversion will be via Middleton Road, St Helier Avenue, and Central Road – July 29 and July 31.
Raynes Park
Arterberry Road (In progress) – Temporary lights will be used along the entire length, where necessary, for gas mains replacement works – April 28 to June 6.
Cambridge Road – Road closures will be in place at the junction with Coombe Lane to enable new customer connections. Diversion will be via Coombe Lane, Durham Road, and Cambridge Road – May 12 to May 23.
Lower Downs Road – Road closures will be in place for sewer cleaning between Toynbee Road and Southdown Road. Diversion will be via Kingston Road, Raynes Park Bridge, Coombe Lane, Lambton Road, and Worple Road – June 3 to June 4.
Raynes Park Bridge – Road closures will be in place for inspection of the bridge and structure. Diversion will be via Kingston Road, Merton Road, The Broadway, Sir Cyril Black Way, Hartfield Road, Wimbledon Bridge, St George’s Road, and Worple Road – June 24 to June 26, with night works between 22:00 and 06:00.
Tudor Drive – Directional closures will be in place for telegraph pole replacement works. Diversion will be via Hillcross Avenue, Links Avenue, Crown Lane, A24 London Road, and A24 Epsom Road – June 28, with night works between 19:30 and 05:30.
West Barnes Lane – Road closures will be in place at the New Malden Crossing for inspections and maintenance. Diversion will be via Claremont Avenue, Burlington Road, and West Barnes Lane – May 17 to May 22, with night works between 23:50 and 05:00.
Work will resume between July 8 and July 12 (night works: 00:05–05:00), and again between July 29 and August 2 (night works: 00:05–05:00).
West Barnes Lane – Road closures will be in place at the Raynes Park Crossing (junction with Burlington Road) for level crossing inspections and maintenance. Diversion will be via West Barnes Lane, Burlington Road, Claremont Avenue, and back to West Barnes Lane – July 15, with night works between 00:30 and 05:00.
Work will resume on August 3, with night works between 00:01 and 06:00.
Wimbledon
A219 The Broadway – Road closures will be in place between Merton Road and Trinity Road for resurfacing works. Diversion will be via Gladstone Road, Sir Cyril Black Way, Hartfield Road, and Kingston Road – June 5 and June 6, with night works between 20:00 and 05:00.
A219 Wimbledon Hill Road –
- Temporary lights will be in place between Worple Road and Alwyne Road from May 17 to May 19 to facilitate a new electrical connection.
- Temporary lights will be in place at the junction with Belvedere Drive to replace an old joint box – May 16 to May 22.
A238 Kingston Road –
- Temporary lights will be in place at the tram crossing for track cleaning – May 3 to May 4, with night works between 01:00 and 05:00.
- Lane closures will be in place outside 419 Kingston Road for installation of a new water meter and operational equipment – May 19 to May 23.
- Lane closures will be in place at the junction with Rutlish Road for a new water connection. Rutlish Road will be closed at the junction with Kingston Road, with a localised diversion. Stop-and-go boards will be used to control traffic over the tram crossing manually – July 14 to July 17.
B235 Worple Road – Temporary lights will be in place outside number 222 to enable service cable upgrades – May 12 to May 16.
Dorset Road – Road closures will be in place for resurfacing works. Resident access will be supported; local diversions will be in place for other traffic – August 4 to August 8.
Dudley Road – Road closures will be in place for resurfacing works. Local diversions will be in place for all other traffic – May 27 to May 28
Dundonald Road – Temporary traffic lights will be in place at the tram crossing to enable track cleaning works – May 3 to May 4, with night works taking place between 01:00 and 05:00
Somerset Road – Road closures will be in place to enable access to underground assets for cabling works. Local diversions will be in place for all traffic – July 15
