TfL has said that it has not looked at introducing an additional safety measure at London bus stops because incidents are ‘rare’. The authority was asked why there are no posts installed at stops to guard against vehicle collisions.
The questioner said: “I have observed that there are currently no vehicle collision safety posts installed at any bus stops in the city. Given the increasing traffic congestion and the potential risks posed to pedestrians waiting at bus stops, I am curious to understand why such safety measures have not been implemented.”
A case officer replied: “Any loss of life or serious injury on London’s streets is a tragedy and by adopting a bold Vision Zero approach, we are putting the elimination of road danger at the heart of what we do. We are taking urgent and continued action in a range of areas by transforming London’s streets, recently introducing new 20mph speed limits across our roads in central London.

They added: “We have not specifically looked into installing collision safety posts at bus stops – it is rare that an incident occurs at a bus stop involving a bus or other vehicle that may injure people waiting at the bus stop. This does not diminish our need to keep people safe but we must balance this against the other requirements of our passengers such as being able to board and alight the bus without impediment, particularly if the accessibility ramp is required.
“As part of our Vision Zero strategy, we are exploring ways to ensure that the vehicles on our streets are as safe as they can be through design and innovation.”
