A “welcoming” north London primary school where students learn about equality and social justice has been awarded outstanding rating in almost all areas by Ofsted. St Josephs Catholic Primary School, in Camden, was described as “exceptionally happy and welcoming”, following an inspection in April 2025. In a report published by Ofsted, inspectors praised the school for being a “calm and stimulating place to learn” where pupils have trusting relationships with both staff and other children.
Staff members at the school were praised for caring deeply about the pupils they taught which contributes to their well-being and academic success. The inspector also pointed out that bullying is never tolerated and if present, it is dealt with quickly by staff.
The curriculum was also heavily praised for being “very ambitious.” In maths, children were taught how to deal with complex problem-solving activities and in geography pupils were given practical activities to take part in.
Children were also given the chance to learn about equality and social justice. The report also said reading was at the heart of the school’s curriculum which meant students were exposed to a range of high-quality texts and authors.
Pupils who have SEND needs are also well supported at St Josephs and their needs are identified “with precision”, meaning they perform exceptionally well. Staff, parents and carers all also work well together at the school which was described as having a “family ethos.” The report also pointed out that leaders at the school are also held to account for the quality of education and that they consider staff welfare.
The inspector said: “Pupils flourish at this exceptionally happy and welcoming primary school. They benefit from highly positive experiences, including a broad, rich and exciting curriculum.
“Staff have the very highest expectations for pupils, including those with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). Staff care deeply for the pupils they teach, which helps ensure pupils’ well-being and academic success are secured remarkably well.”
St Josephs was awarded a grade of “Outstanding” in almost all Ofsted assessment categories which look at quality of education, leadership and more. The school’s early years provision was awarded a grade of “Good” and it was noted that at time staff didn’t always sharply identify when children had learned the curriculum as intended.
