Tottenham and Wales legend Gareth Bale has confirmed his spot at this year’s BMW PGA Championship Celebrity Pro-Am.
Bale, who made over 200 appearances for Spurs during his playing days, will join fellow sporting icons Andy Murray, Ben Stokes, and John Terry, as well as McLaren duo Lando Norris and Zak Brown. The Festival of Golf will take place between September 9-14 at Wentworth Club, just an hour outside of central London.
The 35-year-old spent six years at Tottenham between 2007 and 2013, before he completed a move to La Liga and European giants Real Madrid. In the 2020/21 season, Bale returned to Tottenham on loan from Madrid before he eventually joined Los Angeles FC as a free agent in 2022.
After six months in the MLS, Bale announced his retirement from professional football in January 2023. During his playing days, the forward never hid his love for golf, and he has previously spoken about how he used it as a tool in his career to take him away from the pressure and scrutiny that comes with being a pro footballer.
It makes his close friendship with golfer Rory McIlroy unsurprising, and Bale supported the Northern Irishman at the BMW PGA Championship in September 2024. He also played alongside McIlroy at the Pro-Am competition last year.
Bale’s footballing achievements includes three La Liga titles, five Champions League trophies, and two domestic cups in Spain. At international level, Bale made his Wales debut at 16 years of age in 2006 under former manager John Toshack.
Over the course of his international career, the former Spurs man amassed over 100 caps and scored 41 goals in that time. His finest moment with Wales came at the 2016 EUROs when they defied all odds and qualified for the semi-finals of the competition.
