Tottenham are the Europa League champions.
No, you are not dreaming. You read that correctly. Spurs have won a European trophy for the first time since 1984; they’ve ended a 17-year overall trophy drought.
Ange Postecoglou said he was stating facts when he said he always won something in his second year in a job; and the Spurs manager has been proven right, succeeding where the likes of Mauricio Pochettino, Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte fell agonisingly short.
Tottenham fans have had to wear their fair share of insults over the years for their support of the club. ‘Bottler’ comments, the Harry Kane ‘curse’, and infamously Sir Alex Ferguson’s taunt: “Lads, it’s Tottenham”.
Well that’s all over now. In not just winning a European trophy, but beating Fergie’s old club Manchester United to do so, Spurs have banished the demons, lifted a trophy and will now be competing in the Champions League next season – with all the benefits that brings.
Brennan Johnson will go down in history for helping Spurs over the line, even if it did look a little more like an own goal from Luke Shaw – though the Manchester United defender will not exactly be interested in claiming it.
The victory will mean everything to those connected with Spurs, especially after such a difficult season. They have something truly memorable to celebrate, and will be doing so with a trophy parade on Friday afternoon. Not every one can get there in person, but you can send your message and cheer on the team right here.
