Viktor Gyokeres has just handed Arsenal double Alexander Isak transfer setback

Arsenal will be using the final two weeks of the summer transfer window to offload players that are not part of Mikel Arteta’s plans for the future.

But they may now also use the final few days to add another striker to their ranks too.

Kai Havertz has picked up a knee injury in his substitute appearance against Manchester United and looks set for a spell on the sidelines as a result, which, given Gabriel Jesus is not expected to return to action until November or December due to the ACL injury he suffered last season, leaves new signing Viktor Gyokeres as the only fit recognised striker.

Gyokeres was signed for £63.7million to solve Arsenal’s forward problems, having spent large periods of the second half of last season having to use Mikel Merino as a makeshift striker.

Now, if Arsenal do not sign another frontman, there will be huge pressure on the new signing’s shoulders to deliver.

The Gunners will head into the transfer market to sign a replacement for Havertz, following his knee injury, and that has led to plenty of speculation around a number of names.

Naturally Alexander Iak’s name will be mentioned, given everything that is going on with him right now.

He has refused to return to training with Newcastle and was not part of their squad for the first game of the Premier League season against Aston Villa at the weekend.

He broke his silence on the situation on Tuesday night, releasing a statement saying that promises had been broken.

“The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time,” he said. “To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can’t continue. That’s where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interest of everyone, not just myself.”

Isak was always seen as the dream signing for Arsenal this summer, but his huge price tag and Newcastle’s unwillingness to do business were seen as massive problems in getting a transfer completed.

Any hope of Isak signing for the north London side was then pushed aside when Gyokeres completed that £63.7million move and there has been a second setback to Isak in the form of what Gyokeres did just before the season started.

The Swede – Isak’s international teammate – decided to take the iconic No.14 shirt for the upcoming campaign. That is the number Isak has worn since being at Newcastle and his previous No.19 from his Real Sociedad days is also taken at the Emirates Stadium by Leandro Trossard.

Jesus wears No.9, which you would think would be the natural fit for Isak.
