Water bills to rise by up to £71 – see how much you’ll pay from April 1

Water bills are to become more expensive from next week with bills rising by 6% on average from April 1.

The bill increase was announced earlier this year with Water UK confirming that the increases, equivalent to £27 a year, would leave households with an average annual bill of £473. In Scotland, water and waste charges will go up by 8.8% which is am average rise of £36 a year.

The hike is set to fund infrastructure improvements following a major backlash over deliberate sewage discharges made by water firms over the recent few years. Water UK said this year’s price increases would “unlock” a record £14billion investment to ensure supply security and “significantly reduce” the amount of sewage in British rivers and seas.

Hafren Dyfrdwy customers will see the biggest percentage change, with the typical bill rising by 20% from £362 to £433 – which is an increase of £71. Wessex Water and Anglian Water households will be hit with the biggest average bills, with their costs set to increase to £548 and £529 respectively from £489.

Northumbrian customers will see the lowest average bills at £422 however this is still a rise of £35. Those homes under Britain’s biggest supplier, Thames Water, will see their average charge rise by £15 despite poor performance. Water UK also noted that support for customers struggling was also doubling with more than two million families now being helped with their bills.

  • Northumbrian – £387 rising to £422 (up £35, or 9%)
  • Severn Trent – £411 rising to £438 (up £27, or 7%)
  • South West – £488 falling to £486 (down £2, or 0%)
  • Southern – £428 rising to £479 (up £51, or 12%)
  • Thames – £456 rising to £471 (up £15, or 3%)
  • United Utilities – £446 rising to £481 (up £35, or 8%)
  • Wessex – £489 rising to £548 (up £59, or 12%)
  • Yorkshire – £440 rising to £467 (up £27, or 6%)

Water-only firms
