It’s hard to imagine what could possibly go wrong with this simple snack, but it turns out she isn’t the only one spreading butter on crumpets with this bizarre technique

We all know of the age-old debate when it comes to scones, but they’re not the only snacks swamped with controversy.

For many, the epitome of a quintessentially British debate is the one around scones – should you spread jam before cream, or cream before jam? But you may be surprised to know scones aren’t the only snacks that we Brits are fiercely territorial about. One woman has completely polarised TikTok after buttering her crumpets the ‘wrong way’.

While it’s hard to imagine what could possibly go wrong with this simple staple, the girl chooses to spread the butter on the underside of her crumpets – avoiding the bubbly holes at the top. She was caught red-handed by her partner, Dani Fennessy, who posted to TikTok (@danifennessy): “Imagine meeting the love of your life only to find out they butter crumpets like this.”

Unsurprisingly, this was met with countless gobsmacked comments, but many also confessed to buttering their own crumpet bottoms as well. One person confessed: “I lightly toast it, butter both sides and back in the toaster it goes,” as someone else chimed in: “Upside down rocks. No sweating on the plate, full spread coverage without overfilling bubble canyons.”

Outraged, another added: “Noo you put it on the top so it seeps through the holes and oozes when you bite it,” as one person wrote: “CRUMPET JAIL.”

You may be shocked to know that one even admitted to feeling muddled about which side was the top of a crumpet, writing: “To be fair, I’d never had a crumpet until this year and was genuinely confused about which side.”

According to The Crumpet Man, these British snacks date as far back as 1382, but have often been misunderstood, with people wondering whether they are some kind of cake, muffin or bread.

“Crumpets sit alongside television, football and the internet in the list of Great British inventions,” experts at the site wrote. “Crumpets of some form have been around in England for a few hundred years, but it was really only in the Victorian era that the modern incarnation became recognisable.

“Some people in the English midlands and Yorkshire call normal crumpets ‘pikelets’. Some people in Scotland call Scottish pancakes ‘crumpets’. Go figure, as they say in America.”
