A South London man accused of killing a man who was stabbed outside Sainsbury’s in 2016 has appeared in court. Tyrese Osei-Kofi, 24, from East Dulwich, is charged with the murder of Jamel Boyce, who was knifed in a brawl outside the supermarket in Clapham in October 2016.

Mr Boyce, who was 17 at the time, suffered a cardiac arrest and brain damage, leaving him blind, paralysed and unable to speak, the Old Bailey heard in January. He required round-the-clock care before he died in a care home aged 22 on February 13 2022. A post-mortem examination found the cause of death was a penetrating injury to the chest.

Appearing over the prison video link on Wednesday afternoon (April 10), Mr Osei-Kofi spoke to confirm his name but did not enter a plea during the brief hearing. Defence counsel Graham Trembath KC called for the case to be put off until a later date.

Judge Lynn Tayton KC adjourned the plea and trial preparation hearing for May 17 when Mr Osei-Kofi is expected to make his plea. “I’m adjourning your case as your barrister has asked. On that occasion you will plead guilty or not guilty,” Judge Tayton told Mr Osei-Kofi.

Mr Boyce was nicknamed ‘Smiley’ by fellow pupils at St Francis Xavier sixth form college in Clapham, because of his upbeat attitude. Four members of his family attended court today, while a supporter for Mt Osei-Kofi sat in the public gallery. A provisional trial date has been fixed for 28 October.
