Parents will need to make sure they have specific documentation ready
There are now only days to go until parents need to decide where they want their preteens to study next year. The deadline for secondary school applications is this coming Friday (October 31).
The process can be competitive, so parents will want to make sure they do everything to ensure that their child has the best chance of getting a place at the school they want to attend.
In some instances, applications will also need supporting evidence to be submitted by this Friday’s deadline. Although many parents may have their heart set on one school for their little one, it is important to research alternatives as there are multiple different preferences you can include.
How many schools can I put down on the application?
Parents can choose up to six different preferences to put forward for their child’s secondary school place. It is recommended to use all six of these options as some schools may not be able to take your child.
Many of the more popular schools may also be oversubscribed or have smaller catchment areas. Some children may be able to get a priority place at a school if they have a sibling at the school, have special medical or social needs which mean they need to attend a specific school or looked after or previously looked after status.
How do I apply for my child’s secondary school?
You will need to apply for a secondary school place for your child through your local authority online portal. This applies even if you aren’t going to be applying for a school in your borough.
If your child has an Education and Health Care Plan, you will likely be contacted directly by your local authority. During the application, parents will need to provide full details for their child, proof of address and parent details.
If you are applying for a priority place, or a faith school, you will need to have documentation ready to prove that your child is eligible for this. There is also the option to apply using a paper application form which can be downloaded at the local authority website, or at a library in the area.
Any applications submitted after this date will be considered late. The outcome of applications will be sent to parents by letter or online on National Offer Day, on March 2.
