Heavy rain will be coupled with strong winds on Saturday, November 29
The Met Office has issued a rain warning for London as stormy weather is set to batter the city this weekend. The 18-hour yellow warning will come into force at 6am tomorrow (Saturday, November 29) and last until midnight.
Weather experts say rain clouds will gather over South West England on Friday night before travelling across the country and into the North Sea by Monday morning. There is a potential for 20-30mm to fall widely across England and Wales, with worse affected places experiencing 50mm.
It could result in bus and rail services being affected with journey times taking much longer. The Met Office said there is a small chance of some areas being impacted by flooding.
Met Office Chief Meteorologist, Jason Kelly, said: “While the exact track of the low remains uncertain at this time, there is a clear signal for strong winds and periods of heavy rain, which could lead to surface water flooding and delays to road and rail travel.
“Rain will also push into northeast England during Saturday, some of which could fall as snow over higher ground when the system meets colder air coming down from the north.
“Sunday will be drier and brighter, albeit colder, for many areas with blustery winds lingering near some North Sea coasts. Expect widespread frost overnight into Monday before the next weather system approaches.”
Weather conditions will remain unsettled throughout the next week with temperatures both rising and dropping sharply. Friday, November 28 will be the mildest day with highs of 13C and sunny spells.
On Saturday it will be 12C coupled with heavy rain, before the mercury drops to 8C on Sunday but this will also come with the return of sunshine. More rain is expected into next week but there should be sunny spells throughout.
Why are we seeing this weather?
The UK is currently under the influence of a mobile Atlantic weather pattern, driven by a strong jet stream that is steering a series of low-pressure systems across the country. These systems bring warm, moisture-laden air from the Atlantic, which leads to heavy rain and strong winds. When this milder air meets colder air moving down from the north, it can produce upland snow in some areas, adding to the unsettled conditions.
