A London train operator has warned passengers that they should not try to retrieve items from the railway. It comes after a video appeared to show c2c staff talking to a customer after he fetched a fedora hat from tracks at West Ham station.
The clip, posted on TikTok by yos.o, begins with a station worker in high vis telling a man in a tracksuit and cap: “What do you mean? The hat is not yours.” The man then seemingly suggests that staff have caused him to ‘miss his train’ because he retrieved the headwear.
“Now it’s mine”, he added. The c2c representative then said: “It can’t be yours, because the owner left a note.”

The customer replied: “You can call the person and tell them, ‘finders keepers’ […] Apparently, you said I risked my life, and this is worth my life.”
A spokesperson for c2c said: “We would advise any customers who have lost personal items to report this to a member of our staff. Customers trying to retrieve anything from the tracks themselves are at risk of serious injury or death.”
Some commenters were on the railway worker’s side. One person wrote: “They stood on business tho if i was the hat owner i’d be bare grateful”
Others stuck up for the customer. A different commenter said: “Pls he risked his life for that hat, let him keep it” Another wrote: “that’s his hat now”
One person claimed that they saw the man on a train after the incident, with one thing missing. They said: “Pls he risked his life for that hat, let him keep it”
