Human remains found in Mitcham’s River Wandle believed to be of Croydon’s Sarah Mayhew

Metropolitan Police has confirmed the human remains found in Mitcham are believed to be Sarah Mayhew. Shortly after 2.15pm yesterday (Tuesday, May 21) police were called to Rawnsley Avenue, Mitcham after human remains were found in the River Wandle by contractors carrying out cleaning work.

A crime scene was put in place while the remains were investigated. Sarah’s family have now been informed about this development. They continue to be supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Inspector Martin Thorpe, who is leading the investigation, said: “My thoughts remain with Sarah’s family. We will continue to provide our support as our investigation progresses.

“I expect my officers to remain in the area for some time as they carry out important work at the scene.

“Two people arrested, who were known to Sarah, were later charged with her murder. At present we are not looking for anyone else in connection with her death. Enquiries are ongoing.”

On April 2 human remains found in Rowdown Fieds, New Addington were identified as Sarah Mayhew. Gemma Watts, 48, and Steven Sansom, 44, were arrested on 6 April and subsequently charged with Mayhew’s murder and preventing her lawful and decent burial.
