Viktor Gyokeres is going to be an Arsenal player during the summer transfer window. That is according to transfer guru Gianluca di Marzio anyway.
The Gunners are in the market for a new centre-forward this summer and have made enquiries for Gyokeres and RB Leipzig star Benjamin Sesko.
Arsenal were understood to have agreed a verbal deal to sign Sesko, although contrasting reports also suggested the Gunners were willing to walk away from a move to sign the Slovenian because of increasing wage demands and frustrations over negotiations on personal terms.
The Gyokeres transfer situation has been just as difficult to cut through. Reports of a gentleman’s agreement over a cut-price fee were quashed by Sporting CP president Federico Varandas, while other reports have claimed the Swede has told the club he does not plan to play for them again in order to force through a move.
football.london knows that Arsenal’s main priority in this transfer window is to sign a striker, with the Gunners also keen to sign a back-up goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and winger too.
The question over whether it will be Sesko or Gyokeres has been in the air for the entirety of the summer transfer window so far, but we are no closer to knowing who, if any, Arsenal will sign.
Di Marzio has delivered something of a bombshell with regards to Gyokeres though. Speaking to wettfreunde, he said: “It’s true that Arsenal have him in their sights, but Arsenal will sign Gyokeres because he wants to join Arsenal.
“Other clubs have tried to enter the race, like Juventus, but he will go to Arsenal, and other strikers won’t come if he goes there.
“He was their first target from the start, and now they have to find an agreement with Sporting. He will be an Arsenal player.”
Gyokeres notched an astonishing 54 goals in Sporting CP colours in the 2024/25 season, adding to the 43 he scored in 2023/24. He is one of the most prolific forwards in Europe with a release clause of £85million.
