Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino vents at huge problem in transfer message to Todd Boehly

Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino failed to hide his frustrations after his side failed to defeat ten-man Burnley at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

The Blues were pegged back on two occasions against the relegation-threatened Clarets despite Lorenz Assignon being sent off in the first-half. Cole Palmer scored his 17th and 18th goals of the 2023/24 season for Pochettino’s side but it wasn’t enough.

Burnley, who had manager Vincent Kompany sent off, rescued a point in the 81st minute only moments after Palmer had made it 2-1. Raheem Sterling squandered a huge chance in the latter stages of the contest as Pochettino’s side remain 11th in the Premier League.

Chelsea registered a whopping 33 shots against Burnley, enjoying 69% of the possession against ten men. However, they wasted a number of big opportunities to leave Pochettino frustrated.

“Agreed [two points dropped]. Very disappointed in the way that in the second-half we managed or dealt with the situation,” the Argentine said. “We are a team that, when we play in possession and play forward, we are able to create too many chances, maybe not to score all the chances we create.

“We need to improve our percentage in the game.”

He added: “After today, we didn’t show the capacity, the energy, the anger. Not the minimum to compete in the Premier League. In the defensive phase we concede too much.

“That is why I am so upset and disappointed. It’s more here [in your heart] and here [in your head] than in your legs to be strong like a group, to be strong like a team. That is sometimes the circumstance for different reasons we are so slow evolving in this area.

“That is the key today. It’s not to find excuses. The team played well, yes, we have energy, yes, we go forward, yes, but afterwards when we don’t have the ball we don’t have the same energy.

“Sorry, but I am not with the performance when we don’t have the ball. If we are able to create chances in the way we did and have the capacity to move and find all the different ways to penetrate a team that play with a block very deep.

“They are a very physical team, we need to be strong also and have the capacity to recover the ball too much.”

Pochettino’s words are another reminder of Chelsea’s blatant desire to recruit a natural goalscorer in the summer. Christopher Nkunku’s injury problems and Nicolas Jackson’s inconsistency means the west Londoners have continued to be wasteful in front of goal.
