Chelsea brace for major FFP worry as Euro 2024 could hand Todd Boehly huge headache

By Staff

Chelsea’s hopes of ensuring they avoid breaching Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability rules (PSR) in the summer could take a huge hit.

After spending over £1billion on new signings across three transfer windows, the Blues are back in the spotlight over potential sanctions for breaking financial rules in England.

The club have maintained that they are compliant with PSR, but there is an understandable reason for concern following a third successive year of losses over £90million.

Nottingham Forest and Everton have both been docked points for breaching PSR over the last three years. All eyes will be on this summer to see which clubs may also fall foul of financial regulations with the key to avoiding any punishment being player sales by June 30, the end of the financial year.

Clubs must balance their books by the end of June, with the date almost viewed as a second deadline day for clubs. However, according to the Daily Mail, Chelsea could struggle to sell any of their players by that specific date because of the European Championships.

The report suggests that international managers are set to refuse access to their squad members during the tournament in Germany. This could deal a major blow to clubs hoping to sell players before the end of June, with Euro 2024 beginning on June 14 and lasting for around a month.

Conor Gallagher, who is expected to be part of England’s squad, is one player set to be subject of transfer interest in the summer. The midfielder’s potential sale would generate pure profit due to him graduating from the club’s academy and hand Chelsea a huge FFP boost.

However, with England’s last 16 game set to take place on 29 or 30 June, any hopes of selling Gallagher or any of Chelsea’s wantaway stars could be more difficult than first thought.
